Reflection
Over the course of this summer semester at Salt Lake Community College, I took this English 2010 class along with an Introductory Chemistry course. This was definitely one of the hardest semesters I’ve had, although I was only taking two classes, when I normally take four. Because the semester is half as long as usual (eight weeks instead of sixteen), it was much quicker than usual and so a lot had to be done in such a short amount of time. This was definitely a challenge but I believe I did well making it through. I feel like I met the goals for this class simply because I got an alright grade on genres I’d never written before such as the public service announcement, profile and report styles, therefore I think I learned how to write in those genres somewhat more effectively than if I hadn’t. First I started out assigning myself a topic I would like to write on and then did some research on the topic from reliable sources. After that I started writing a draft of the report on the topic, for which I then turned in to get feedback on. Then I did the same for the profile, except I took the information I wrote on from someone that I know of. The third assignment was the proposal which is a typical argumentative paper in which I wrote a draft of a problem pertaining to my topic and put forth a solution, which was given back to with feedback. Lastly, I submitted a PSA which was evaluated by the professor and given back to me. After completing all the assignments I revised three of the four with all the corrections given by the professor and then some. I had problems writing in genres I wasn’t familiar with such as the report because I’m not used to being objective about an assignment and tried to make the paper not so argumentative although it was hard to do so. I was able to complete the assignment with a fairly objective view and able to report the information effectively. This was probably the first time I have ever had to write papers that weren’t inherently persuasion papers and it was definitely hard to do yet I completed them all and it is definitely something interesting to learn. When writing you can’t always use the same type of writing style, you have to account for your purpose, your audience, and basically what your goal is in writing or creating a piece of work.
